In the mind of the firearms owner, firearms maintenance always begins with thinking about a lubricant, and then a cleaner, or both, whether it be a grease, an oil, semi-fluid, cleaner degreaser, solvent spray or a CLP formula. And, in every sport shooter's bag is something that they chose to use, probably because another gun owner educated them, or it was something they learned in the military, or even just liked the way it looked on the gun store shelf, and picked it up.
From there, it lead to buying a gun cleaning kit, which probably came with patches, a bronze brush, a patch holder and a gun cleaning rod, along with a jag and a cotton mop sized to the right caliber. Or maybe, it lead to purchasing a one-piece gun cleaning rod, or a bore cleaning rope, or other accessories like an all-purpose brush, swabs and a bore guide. All brands of firearms need their attention.
For the handgun owner, a pistol is more compact and can be broken down into dozens of gunmetal small parts, but few people really venture beyond removing the slide and the barrel, so cleaning and lubricating is never thorough. But, for the rifle or shotgun user, bore treatment is more important. There is heavier carbon buildup and possibly copper fouling. So, there is a greater need to scrub with a bronze brush, and use stronger solvents, whether it be an aerosol cleaner, or liquid copper solvent or other bore solvents, not to mention, more cotton patches. All of this effort is designed to proper clean firearms, and then, more importantly, lubricate those surfaces to keep them in fire-ready condition, and protect them from the outside environment, damaging solvent residue and pre-existing lubricant and buildup that lingers.
